Preparing Your Store for Peak Season

Peak season — Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the holiday shopping weeks that follow — can make or break a brand's quarter. The stores that handle the surge well come out with new customers and clean reviews; the ones that don't spend the season firefighting stockouts, delayed shipments, and support tickets. Preparation has to start well before the rush.

Why Planning Early Matters

Order volume during peak weeks can run several times higher than a normal month, and it arrives in a compressed window. Inventory, staffing, and shipping decisions that would be easy to adjust in April become much harder to fix in November once the surge has already started. Early planning gives you room to correct course before it costs you sales.

Forecasting Demand

Start with your own history — last year's order volume by week, by SKU, and by channel is the best baseline you have. Layer in anything that's changed since then: new marketing spend, new products, new sales channels, or planned promotions. It's better to forecast slightly high on your fastest-moving SKUs than to run out mid-campaign.

Inventory & Storage Readiness

Make sure inventory for your top sellers is in your fulfillment center — not still in transit — well ahead of your first promotion. Confirm your 3PL has the storage capacity to hold the extra volume, and that receiving lead times are accounted for in your reorder schedule.

Staffing for the Surge

Pick, pack, and shipping throughput depends on having enough hands on the floor. Ask your fulfillment partner how they staff for peak — whether that's seasonal hires, extended shifts, or flexing labor across their network — and confirm it well before volume climbs, not after orders start slipping.

Shipping & Carrier Capacity

Carriers apply peak-season surcharges and can face their own capacity constraints during the busiest shipping weeks of the year. Confirm your 3PL's carrier relationships and cutoff dates for guaranteed delivery windows, and communicate those dates to customers clearly at checkout.

A Pre-Peak Checklist

In the weeks before your first promotion: confirm inventory levels against your forecast, verify staffing and storage capacity with your 3PL, review carrier cutoff dates, and test your site and checkout flow under load. A short readiness review now avoids most of the surprises that come with peak volume.
